Why the Cottage Drains Give Out

Built for railway workers

The cottages and terraces here date from the 1870s, first housing men from the Newcastle rail yards and then steelworks families. Their sewers are short earthenware lengths joined by collars, and the soft alluvial ground and fill beneath the grid has been nudging those joints apart ever since. Fig roots and street-tree roots find each gap and grow into the pipe.

Two homes on one pipe

Plenty of the semis drain through a single shared clay line, so a blockage on one side can leave the house next door without a working toilet as well. Clearing it is the easy part; the camera shows whether the joints will let roots straight back in.

Flat ground, heavy rain

The suburb sits low, near the 8-metre contour, and slopes only slightly toward Throsby Creek. Average rainfall is 1,091 millimetres a year, and when a cloudburst lands, the street and yard drainage overflows before the creek does.

How Quotes Work Here

That matters most in an old cottage, where the pipe behind the wall is the unknown until someone tests it.

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours).

On a cottage job the price turns on what the camera or the pressure test finds:

  • Reaching the pipe A sewer under a low-set floor or a paved rear yard takes more time to reach than one beside an open gully.
  • The material in the ground Clay, old steel, copper and plastic each call for different fittings and methods.
  • Parts and scope A tap washer and a replaced sewer section are different jobs, and the written price spells out which it is.
  • Night and weekend work Outside business hours a separate rate applies, and it sits in the quote you approve.

Not the right call: a roof leaking around old flashing belongs to a roofer, and a cracked shower base that needs new waterproofing is a waterproofer's job, so we name the trade to ring instead.

The Call, Step by Step

  1. 1

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1232 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 2

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 3

    Confirm, then repair

A camera, pressure gauge or leak detector confirms the fault, and the repair goes to that exact spot before the site is tidied.

  4. 4

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Old Gas Pipe and Scaled Water Lines

Gas arrived early

This was among the first Newcastle suburbs connected to gas, and some cottages still carry steel gas pipe and old bayonet points from that era. Ahead of any appliance swap, the line is pressure tested, and a run whose jointing compound has broken down is replaced before anything is connected.

Water through rusty steel

Cottages that have missed a renovation can still take their water through galvanised pipe that has scaled up inside. That shows as a weak back tap and brown water first thing in the morning, and swapping the steel for copper fixes both.

New units by the creek

Area figures record 525 dwellings approved in five years, and the apartments and townhouses along the creek corridor start out with modern pipe and their own strata arrangements.

Plumbing Questions From Islington Households

Is there a call-out fee?

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours). Evening and weekend visits are charged at a separate rate, which you learn during the call, well before a van leaves. The repair itself is priced in writing either way.

What plumbing jobs do you take on in Islington?

Blocked drains and sewers, stormwater lines, hot water faults and replacements, cooktop and heater installs, gas leak tracing, hidden water leaks, gutter guards and work for strata managers and landlords. That covers houses, units and shops, from a dripping kitchen mixer in a cottage to a split pipe behind a shopfront.

Can you clear blocked drains in the older cottages?

Yes. Those cottages drain through clay sewers with worn joints that roots push into. A jetter or an electric eel breaks through the blockage, and a camera then travels the pipe so you see what caused it and whether the joints need repair.

Do you do gas fitting and gas leak repairs?

Yes. Our licensed gas fitters connect cooktops, ovens, heaters and BBQ points, and they find and repair leaks. If you can smell gas now, get everyone outside, leave the switches alone and ring the gas network's fault line from the street, then call us.

Who fixes a burst pipe on the street side of the meter?

The pipe from the meter into your house is ours to repair. A burst on the street side of the meter, or in the main under the road, belongs to Hunter Water, so ring their faults line for that one. If you can't tell which side it is on, call us and we will check.

Do you work with strata managers and landlords?

Yes. The tenant gets a booking confirmation and a message before we arrive, the work is photographed, and the landlord or managing agent gets an itemised account. Urgent repairs and routine maintenance follow the same steps.
